914 - 3.8L DME | 915 WEVO Tail Shifter Conversion

This little 914 2.0L four came down from Colorado for our "auto spa treatment". The customer wanted reliability & great performance for his state of Co. that had to adapt and perform in various altitudes and temperature conditions! Well there is an answer to that problem, the 3.2L & 3.6L air cooler DME engine conversion from PATRICK MOTORSPORTS.

Before the 914 was delivered our customer had decided that a 3.6L 964 DME engine coupled to a late ‘85 915 transaxle would be the drivetrain package. He received the estimate, we received a deposit, and the engine & transmission were prepared before the car was even here. Two technicians disassembled the 914 the day it was delivered in less than 6 hours allowing the customer to see everything and evaluate with us the chassis/foundation and create an entire build sheet for the project. We then started the restoration on the chassis, body work, harness, suspension, brakes, and interior.

The game plan for “the look” was to use a cool early PORSCHE color, and keep the cars simple clean lines. No GT flares, only lightweight GT bumpers, GT front style Oil Cooler only bigger & lightweight GT type valances front & rear. The color is early “JADE” green, with matte black trim. The trim and bumper tops we all shot in DuPont 2 stage matte clear over black. The “JADE” is also DuPont 2 stage, with the interior of the chassis, engine bay, belly, and all inner fenders painted with a color matched linear polyurethane (a special product we have used for over 15 years). The customer wanted a sleek look, so we fitted the 16”x7” 951 Fuchs alloys all the way around, and also finished them in a matte black powder coating. Take a look, more photos to follow.

We also used the solid rear transmission mount set for the 914. These are manufactured from billet aluminum and delrin.part number PMP914STM.

We also installed our heavy duty throttle cable kit for the 914 6 conversions. This includes a special mounting tab and silicone fire sleeve. The kit comes with a length of plastic tubing that is used as a cable guide. The 964 and 993 have this built into the chassis, you will need to install this below the throttle rod keepers. This is a little bit of work but makes the Acton smooth and reliable.

The front trunk is the heart of our dry sump oil cooling system. This starts out with a Peterson OIL TANK part# OIL 08-0011-DB - 16 quart (4 gallon) aluminum – dual breather - 9 inch. diameter X 19 inches tall- Also uses the billet aluminum brackets part # OIL 08-0101

The oil is routed to the engine using Goodridge fittings and stainless braided hoses, from the engine it returns through the Peterson remote oil filter remote mount, part # OIL 09-0304, to the front through the Mocal oil thermostat part # OIL-12THER, that will route the oil through the front Setrab oil cooler part # PMP 500-15NPT3/4, when needed to keep the engine at optimum temperature.

IF YOU HAVE EVER WORKED ON A 914 WITH WEAK SPRINGS IT WAS EASIER TO JUST REMOVE THE BONNET. THIS TAKES CARE OF THAT PROBLEM. THE OPENING IN THE CENTER IS AN UPGRADE ALSO TO MAKE SERVICING THE ALTERNATOR AND BELT REPLACEMENT EASIER. IT HAS A REMOVABLE COVER.

HERE IS THE BODY COMPLETELY STRIPPED AND READY FOR PRIMER. WE DO NOT USE BODY FILLERS TO CORRECT POOR REPAIRS! ALL REPAIRS ARE BUTT WELDED AND SMOOTHED SO FILLER IS NOT NEEDED. THE MAJORITY OF PAINT PROBLEMS CAN BE LINKED TO FILLERS THAT SHRINK OR CRACK.

Every component is installed prior to priming and painting so fitment problems can be corrected easily, then reprimed if needed so the finished job will look better than a factory.

Application:
The WEVO 915 SideShift kit is a new approach to an old problem. A solution long overdue for the many mid engine Porsche cars that can choose from the 901 or 915 series transmissions.

With most modern 6 cylinder mid engine cars capable of developing torque output above the practical limit of the 901 series transmission, the 915 has become increasingly preferred for the larger gears, crown wheel and pinion and drive flanges.
